V!

Just a couple sketches from a bunch I took on Saturday watching part of a 1950's documentary about World War II entitled "V! Victory at sea".  There was some really fantastic footage and the story was told very well, I would highly recommend it.

Show some hustle! (Development Sketches)

Lol another character idea I've been kicking around, a gym teacher based on one I had in junior high.  He was a tough as nails ex-Navy Seal, but if you caught him at the right moment you realized he was a teddy bear way down deep.  Don't ever tell him that, though- he might make you run laps until your feet erode a new school swimming pool ;)

These are just some development drawings, he's not completely nailed down yet.  I'm also working on some of the kids in the class and the school principal.  Enjoy!

Witch Doctor

This is the character that kind of spurred the whole "English explorer" idea from the previous post.  He started out as a doodle in my sketchbook, with the idea being that a witchdoctor is cursing a foreigner for committing a tribal taboo known as "The Great and Unforgiveable No-No".   I kind of liked him, so I decided to build a variety of characters around him to flesh out his world.  I'm tentatively calling the story, "Pish-Posh" :)

Exploring

Howdy blogfolk!  Guess what?  I had an interview with Sony Animation yesterday!  I don't know whether I got the internship yet, but keep your digits crossed!

After reviewing my portfolio, one suggestion in they gave me was to branch out and show some versatility in character design.  I've started a couple of personal design projects to work on that, more as it develops!  Above are some preliminary sketches for the first project, a story about an explorer's wife who has to rescue her husband after he's turned into a guinea pig by a shaman.  Or more accurately, he swaps their places . . . you'll see :)

Straight on 'Till Morning

This painting was done as a gift for my girlfriend, who is Peter Pan's biggest fan :)  Tinkerbell is painted close to some sunflare artifacts, making it difficult to tell whether she is real or if it's just a trick of the sun.  That way, the viewer can choose whether to believe.  I thought it was deep andyways :)  The composition is intended to be highly disorienting, but at the same time full of energy- conveying the feeling of embarking on an adventure for the first time

First Editorial Cartoon published!

See the article here: Link
(dialogue written by Jenny Hamilton)

I recently did an editorial cartoon for a friend's aunt at the Hillsboro, Oregon school district, expecting it only to be viewed by the school board and the PTA/district employees.  However, I got a call yesterday from the Editor of the Hillsboro Argus (a local newspaper) asking permission to post it online and run it in their Friday Paper.  It was an unexpected, but welcome surprise :)

Apparently the cartoon and the campaign it supports have been having a positive effect, last night the school board voted on a new grading policy that will give students a better environment to grow and succeed. Woot!

A quick sketch of some kids at the Cannon Center the other day, goofing around. I suspect they had visited the desert bar shortly before . . . . gosh, I sound like such an old fogie :)
